I travel through chennai metro to my work daily and this story is half true which i thought i can pen down with a proper ending. The underground stations in chennai metro are definitely eerie at late hours and this lift working automatically adds fire to the eeriness.

The sturdy grip

“Today I definitely have to uninstall this social networking app. Its eating up my time and spoiling my productivity” he told himself.

When he was about to click the uninstall button, the app notification about a photo comment popped up.

He enthusiastically opened the app again. The app smiled wickedly strengthening its grip on him.

The mask

It was women’s day and she received ‘The most successful woman’ for that year.

She gave a long inspirational speech about the struggles she faced to reach the height and insisted the company to give more opportunities for women.

After the event one of her team leads approached her and said “We have got this CV of a candidate. She seems to be the apt candidate for the role. Shall I ask her to come for face to face interview this week.”

She gave a irritated look at him and said-
“How many times should I tell you that we dont want female candidates for our team? They will join today and then they will leave company telling silly reasons. Marriage, baby etc etc. It wont work out for us. Better look for some guys. Its always good to invest on them.”

He left her cabin thinking “Women dont have enemies anywhere else but in the form of women”.

P.S: This story is purely fiction. If it resembles anyone in real life, then it is just a coincidence.

The seed

“Why are you spending so much for her studies? Today she will say she want to study for just 4 years and then she will get a job and earn more, then she will tell she will marry of her choice. You very well know that boys in our caste hardly study. Who will marry your daughter if she does all I said?” advised his mother.

His daughter was state topper in her 12th standard and the application of top engineering college laid in front of him just for his signature.

His daughter was about to leave the room completely disappointed when he held her hand and gave her the application form. She nodded her head in disappointment and tugged the form in his hand again. He stopped her and opened it to show her the form duly signed by him. Her face brighten up with unbound joy.

The disgrace

“You dont need her. She is a disgrace. She killed her mother the moment she is born. Do you really need her? Throw her in some ditch and come home.” said his mom and went to sleep.

His head rotated fastly. He took her in his arms. With tears filled eyes, he walked towards the outskirts of the village. Nearing the huge garbage pile he stopped. He looked at his daughter’s face once, kissed her in her forehead. He weeped silently not disturbing his daughter who was sleeping and walked fastly towards the bus stand to leave the village ditching his family.

Not Hers but Ours

Not Hers but Ours

The morning sunlight peeped via the gap in the bedroom curtain and hit my face. I slowly opened my eyes feeling the warmth. My eyes glared. Rubbing my eyes I looked at the alarm clock in the side table of our bed. It did display 7:15 AM, 28th Feb, Sunday. I tugged myself into the bed sheet and laid down facing her. The big eyes of her hid themselves behind the eye lids with thick eye lashes. The sunlight fell on her cheeks now giving a glow to her round face. Her face was spread with peace and calmness which I could rarely see these days. I wanted to hug her tightly feeling her breath in my chest and sleep for some more hours as we used to do couple of years back. After our son was born, he steals most of her time.

I woke up to go to her side and give a peck and sleep sometime hugging her. I found our son holding my tees and smiling cutely , opening his arms widely to lift him. I lifted him from bed and he did show the way to the toilet to pee. As he finished pee-ing, he seemed to be brisk and started running towards the bed to wake his mom. I ran behind him to stop him from waking her up and took him out of our bedroom. I went back to bedroom and changed the alarm time from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM. I came out to see my son confused. I told him that we shall wake mom later and did switch on television to engage him.

At 9:30 AM as expected, she woke up with a shock of being late and furiously came out shouting

” Hey I told you to wake me by 7:30 right? Why do you do this da?”. I casually answer

“C’mon baby. Its a sunday and you get rest only today. I feel guilty to wake you up di.”.

She frowns and walks to attend nature’s call. I could hear her murmur her responsibilities to be completed and blaming me for stopping her from doing them this week. She comes out of the toilet to see myself and my son being so immersed in watching the new song in the music channel and she gets irritated more.

“You very well know that I need to clean home and organize shelves,  wash the bedspreads and pillow covers and dry them in the terrace and then cook lunch. I told you to wake me up by 7:30 so that I could have finished them by now and cook lunch on time. You feel so proud giving me time to sleep but who will do all the things I listed. Today you will feel proud but tomorrow when you see something you will complain that I dont keep home tidy.” feeling disappointed she rubbed her palms and  wiped her face when the washing machine beeped.

She gave a suspicious ‘Did you do that?’ look and making her hair bun she went to search her hair clip to tuck the bun into it in the shelf. Again she does throw the suspicious ‘Did you do that?’  look on me and asks where did you keep the clips? My son takes her to the wardrobe where I had kept it in her clip box. She comes out seeing organized shelves and throws me ‘Did you do that?’ look. She collects the clothes from washing machine and crosses the kitchen to dry it in the service area and comes back to me and throws ‘Did you do that?’ look seeing the kitchen cleaned up. I raise my eyebrows to ask ‘What?’.

“What? Being so nice huh? Why are you doing this? You should have woke me up. These are my tasks. You should take our son for hair cut, wash your bike. You have your own to-do list for the weekend. Then why da you are taking this burden as well?”. I silently go to balcony and she follows.

“You haven’t answered my question.”

“I didnt feel like waking up my sleeping beauty” I said and gave her a peck in her cheeks.

“I am not convinced” she said gazing the empty roads.

“Ok. Listen. Kid’s hair cut can be done next week. I will do bike wash now. So there is no compromise in any of the stuff. Relax baby. Lets share the load not just today but going forward.” I embraced her. She removed my hands from her and ordered

“Ok, then make coffee for me and then dry the clothes in the terrace.”

“Ok mam. Your hot coffee will be delivered in couple of minutes” I said doing a bow gesture.

She bursts out laughing and hugs me tightly. Our son who had been waiting for this moment comes running and joins us making it a group hug.

False zeal

The protesters were protesting to stop sales of liquor in the state outside the liquor shop run by government . Suddenly agitation raised and the protesters started entering the shop and broke the bottles. They started thrashing the alcoholics who were present there.

Raasu was sitting in a corner in the shop witnessing all the happening. He took some gulps of liquor and would often see the entrance expecting someone. When a protester came near Raasu to get the liquor bottle in his hand, Raasu pushed him away and started walking outside the shop with his bottle. The protester got furious and pushed Raasu from back. Raasu fell on the ground shouting the name of his wife Kamala and got his head injured.

Kamala came running from outside with a chips packet in her hand which should have been a side dish for Raasu.

“Hey why did you do this to my husband?”

“Oh. so you are his wife? Whats that in your hand? chips packet ? Side dish for your husband? Whatta great lady you are. You yourself buy your husband alcohol and also feed him with side dish? So disgusting. When so many ladies are protesting to close the shop to save their men’s life, see this goddesses who is buying liquor for her husband herself” said the protester out of frustration and hatred and laughed out loud.

“Mister don’t cross your lines. You might be protesting against alcohol consumption. You might think yourself as a hero. But without knowing our background don’t defame us”

“Oh see this b****. She is giving justification for the mistake. Hey you, listen here. We don’t want to hear anything in support of alcohol consumption. Better shut up and leave with your husband.”
Hearing the swear word from the protester Kamala got furious. She helped Raasu to stand up and checked his injuries. Frowning as the protester she said –

“You called us what? B****? Come with me and I will show you what we do. You better know it.”

The protester hesitated but Kamala pulled him to a nearby house’s backyard. Raasu followed them. The foul smell from the septic tank made the protester to close his nose with his hand kerchief immediately.

“Hmm so you couldn’t bear it from few feet away but we have to get down into it to clean them. And do you think we can do that normally? Do you know how tough is the job of manual scavengers? We are also human beings. At least going forward don’t pour words without knowing the reality.”

The protester stood still and slowly uttered SORRY.

Breakup

He came close to her like kissing and gave a wicked smile asking
“Shall we breakup?”
“Let me know when.” She said.
In a deep voice he said “Now”.
“Really?”she asked showing her back to him and hiding her tears.
In a firm tone he said “YES”.
She turned fastly to give him a slap and leave the room  but saw him on his knees with a proposal ring. Smiling broadly he said “Lets end this live in relationship. Will you marry me?”
Her voice choked and she said “YES” hugging him tightly.

The Betrayal

It was today that Mahesh was supposed to get married. His parents are still not out of the shock. Mahesh’s mom keeps weeping all her day and his father is speechless. Tears rolling down his cheeks, Mahesh keeps repeating “She could have told me earlier. Why did she cheat me?”

Mahesh met Ishu 3 months back along with their families and the marriage was fixed the same day. It was a pukka arranged marriage. As every newly engaged couple, they dated each other and got to know them better. Mahesh was always enthusiastic while Ishu was very grounded. Mahesh wanted Ishu to get everything the best and so he arranged everything the way she liked. He bought a new flat and designed the way she wanted it to be. He made all arrangements for them to live in the flat. Though the flat got ready a month ahead of their wedding, he didnt start living there. He wanted to step into the home with Ishu. Mahesh even volunteered to share the wedding expenses as Ishu had once told him that her father is struggling to arrange money for their marriage. Ishu loved Mahesh and she was so much caring towards him too.

It was bright morning last week. Mahesh’s phone rang loudly displaying the caller as Private number. Mahesh lazily woke up and saw the time. The clock stuck 9:30. Lazily he woke up and picked the call. The caller didnt wait for Mahesh to start the conversation. The voice said “Ishu is marrying her boy friend today at the City registrar office at 11 a.m. Come and wish her luck” and the line got disconnected. Mahesh felt hard to rewind what he heard. His head was aching like hell as the result of previous night’s bachelor party. He immediately called Ishu but her number was not reachable. He refreshed himself and made a coffee. Sipping the hot coffee, he dialed Ishu’s number again. It was still not reachable. He quickly opened Whatsapp and found her last seen was few minutes ago. “Should I call her home? Will this be true? Nah nah. This should be some prank call. We had spoken before I went to the party yesterday. She was romantic and wanted to talk for few more minutes but these guys pulled me into the dance floor. She had even sent few kisses emoticons.” . The thoughts kept running in loop in his mind. Though his heart sai it would be a prank call, his mind made him dial Ishu’s home number.

“Hello”

“Hello uncle. Namaskar. I am Mahesh here.”

“Namsakar Namaskar. How are you?”

“I am good uncle. I could not reach Ishu on her mobile and so I dialed to landline. Can I talk to her?”

“Sure Sure. Here she comes.”

Mahesh was able to hear his to-be father-in-law telling Ishu that it was call from Mahesh in all hush hush sounds.

“Hi Mahesh. What happened? All fine?”

“Hey Ishu. Yeah baby. All is well. Where is your mobile? Its not reachable since morning.”

“Uff. I am so Sorry. I had kept it in the hall and you know there is no network coverage. And why do you sound very tensed. Wait I will call you from my mobile in sometime.” said Ishu disconnecting the call.

Mahesh waited for an hour and he didnt receive a call back from Ishu. It was 10:30 a.m. He called her home again.

“Hello” said his to-be mother-in-law.

“Hi aunty,Namaskar. I am Mahesh.”

“Hello Mahesh ji. Namaskar. How are you?”

“I am good aunty. Where is Ishu? I am not able to reach her mobile.”

“Oh she just now left home. I guess she has went to meet her friends for inviting them for the wedding.”

“Ok aunty. Not a problem. Please ask her to call me once she is back.”

Mahesh disconnected the call with his heart beat increasing. “She wont do this to me.” He kept repeating this in his mind. He became restless and didnt know what to do. Taking a deep breath he decided to go to the registrar office. He took bath and dressed up but his mind kept saying “Its not right to doubt Ishu. She is my wife and she loves me a lot. Its crap to doubt her just based on a prank call.” And this thought stopped him from leaving to the registrar office. It was 10.50 a.m when he got a call from the private number again. The same voice spoke.

“Hello Mr.Mahesh. You still at home relaxing and thinking Ishu will be yours? She is going to get married in 10 minutes.”

“Hey you bloddy a**hole. What do you want? Why are you confusing me? Who are you? You coward calling from a private number. If you have guts call me from your original number.”

“Ha ha ha. Its not cowardness Mr.Mahesh. Its just a safety measure to prevent you from stopping my marriage. I am going to tie the knot to Ishu in 10 minutes. Do whatever you can? Good bye.”

“Hey **** ***** **** “…. Mahesh shouted out at the guy on the other side but it didnt reach the caller as he had already disconnected and the beep sound was only heard by Mahesh.

Mahesh called Ishu’s house and told the information and told them to come to registrar office. He rushed in his bike to the registrar office and it was already 11:15 a.m. Ishu’s parents and her brother reached there at same time. Gasping and feeling tough to breath, Mahesh ran inside the registrar office. Ishu’s brother followed him. Mahesh would not have even dreamed till few seconds back that he would be cheated by the girl whom he thought would spend rest of his life with, by the same girl on whose wish he designed the flat where they planned to stay after marriage, by the same girl who spoke with so much love and care half an hour back, by the same girl who promised him so many things post wedding.

Ishu and the man, who should have called Mahesh were standing right in front of Mahesh and Ishu’s family with all smiles and in the newly wedded look. Seeing her family and Mahesh, Ishu tightly held the hand of her new husband. Mahesh couldn’t understand if it was real. He found his whole world crumbling down in front of him. He just froze. Ishu’s mom was first to react. She just ran and rose her hand to slap her daughter who had shattered the dreams of everyone around. A police officer got hold of her hand and warned her that any violence against Ishu and her husband would land them in jail.

Mahesh and Ishu family had no choice but to allow them to go happily. Mahesh left the place immediately not uttering a single word. He didnt know how to convey this to his parents who are old and sensitive. He didnt know how to face his friends who are counting days to enjoy his wedding. He didnt know what his life is going to be without Ishu.

P.S : This is a true incident that has happened to my friend and would also have happened to one of your associates. There could be lot of guys who are facing criticism or insult because of such girls in their life. If the same would have happened to the girl, everyone would have got agitated and would have tried to bring it to lime light by making police complaints and media would have covered it adding more spice to the news. But when it happens to a guy like Mahesh, it is just supressed. He doesnt even have rights to go and complaint against her in India as the law is always in favour of women. I am not against it but I just wish the law could be not biased based on gender.
